An Ode to Coffee

Coffee.

The delicious, energy-giving elixir of the heavens.

The life force behind cheery, smiling moms ready to face the day.

The gasoline which fuels parents everywhere.

Deep, dark, almost black or pale, creamy and lovely brown.

The beautiful, playful steam drifts upwards from the cup.

Coffee.

The rules for moms with coffee are simple.

No loud noises before it.

No big decisions before it.

No adulting before your coffee.

That small feeling of danger as you reach for another cup. This could be the one. The one that sets you over the edge, shaking and out of control. Or it could be the one that sends you off as a productive worker bee.

(Come on, I’m a mom. This is how dangerously I live.)

Which one will this be?

Coffee.

I can’t tell you of my love of coffee. There aren’t words. Iced, hot, latte, mocha, macchiato…I love them all. French press with cream and sugar? Bring it on.

Artisan roasted? Yes. Trader Joe’s? Absolutely.

I normally start my day with a lovely, creamy, warm cup.

I pour the deep, dark liquid into my favorite mug. It makes that “filling the cup” noise. You know the one. Add a bit of coconut sugar and watch the cream dance, just below the surface.

I savor that first sip.

I stare blissfully in my cup, drifting on wisps of delicate white. I am infinite.

With coffee, of course.

As I set down my mug, ready to begin the day I notice two smiling toddler faces headed straight for me.

I panic.

BANG!

I sigh.

Off to make another cup.

The rules of coffee are clear and unflinchingly rigid: no adulting before your coffee.
