April: What KC Moms Need to Know

Healthy Kids Day at the Y

Join Ys throughout the metro for the annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day® on Saturday, April 27. Ys will offer free community events to motivate and teach families how to develop and maintain healthy routines and keep kids learning all summer long. 
Activities will include fun active play such as family and kids fitness classes and obstacle courses, plus educational activities focused on STEM, healthy snacks and resources for families. Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead Opens! (April 1)

It’s not really Spring in Kansas City until Deanna Rose opens! Be sure to check out our guide to Hidden Gems at the Farmstead. Memberships can be purchased in-person at Matt Ross Community Center or Tomahawk Ridge Community Center or at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead after it opens for the season.

Disney on Ice (April 4-7)

Join Mickey Mouse and his friends at Disney On Ice presents Mickey’s Search Party, a brand-new adventure filled with world-class skating, high-flying acrobatics and unexpected stunts! Help them follow Captain Hook’s treasure map and look for clues in the search for Tinker Bell in immersive, fantastic worlds. Explore the colorful spirit realm of Coco in Miguel’s Disney On Ice debut, sail away with Moana as she bravely saves her island, see Belle in the sky above you as the enchanted chandelier comes to life, and sing-along with Elsa in the icy world of Frozen. Forks & Corks (April 4)

Now in its 23rd year, Harvesters is thrilled to host Forks & Corks at Arrowhead Stadium where guests have the opportunity to taste samples of delectable food, desserts, wine, beer and cocktails from more than 60 of Kansas City’s best restaurants and beverage purveyors. Forks & Corks was created in 1997 to support Harvesters’ hunger relief effort and is known as one of Kansas City’s best food and wine events. 100% of the proceeds benefit the hungry in our community. Powell Gardens (April 5)

Get outside and celebrate Missouri Arbor Day at Powell Gardens. Go home with your own Chinkapin Oak seedling for your home garden. Walk through the Gardens on your own nature scavenger hunt and spot Powell Garden’s top 10 trees. 

KCMB Spring Family Egg Hunt (April 6)

This is not your typical grab and run hunt. We will have spring crafts, fun activities for all ages from our amazing sponsors, professional photography (with digital photos available at no additional cost to attendees), food and beverage, and no-stress family fun – all culminating in age divided egg hunts. Meet Daniel Tiger at the Kansas City Zoo (April 13-14)

Everyone’s favorite tiger will be stopping by the KC oo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other zoo events including Autism Awareness Day (April 7), Party for the Planet (April 20), Avengers Weekend (April 27-28) and the Humboldt Penguin March (April 27-28). Check them all out on the Zoo events page. 

Sunday Funday with the KC Royals (April 14)

Kansas City’s Best: Foundation Day! (April 16)

Celebrate the official start of the 2019 fountain season in the City of Fountains! Fountain Day is a Spring ritual and holiday unique to Kansas City. Please join the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners and the City of Fountains Foundation at the entrance to Swope Park and celebrate our newly renovated fountain made possible by GOkc funds.

Beat Bugs opens at The Coterie (April 16 – May 23) 

One of our favorite children’s theaters the Coterie, opens a new show this month! Inspired by music made famous by The Beatles, Beat Bugs: A Musical Adventure hits the stage. Meet the Beat Bugs – five insect pals who explore the world and pick up life lessons along the way in this new musical, based on the Netflix animated series that incorporates songs of that famous band. Walter, Buzz, Jay, Crick, and Kumi embark on a mission to save Strawberry Fields from being taken over by a stink bug with other plans for it. Some of the songs from the iconic catalogue that appear in the show include “All You Need Is Love,” “Come Together,” “Yellow Submarine,” “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “With A Little Help From My Friends.”

KCMB Mom Tip: Recommended for ages 3-7, and lasts 70 minutes. 

Downtown Wine Walk (April 27)

Sip, taste and explore downtown Kansas City at the Downtown Wine Walk on Saturday, April 27 in the Power & Light District. Enjoy live music on 14th Street, wine tastings and small plates at each of the participating venues. Proceeds benefit The Children’s Place. Must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

Ready, Set Spring at The City Market (April 28)

City Market welcomes SPRING on Sunday, April 28, noon to 3 p.m. with free, family-friendly fun!

Bring chairs/blankets, grab a bite at your favorite City Market restaurant and relax. Scheduled activities will be just inside the entrance at 5th & Walnut and include puppets, musical and aerial acrobat performances. Other activities include DIY seed bomb making with Scraps KC, an organic toymaker and game station, heirloom seed exchange, balloon twisters, face painters, LIVE garden fairies and much more!

Sarah is mama to 9-year-old, Henry, 6-year-old Clark and 4-year-old Lucy. After growing up in Manhattan, Kansas (Go Cats!), she moved to Minnesota where she met her husband, Shea. Realizing how much she hated snow in May, she convinced him to move to Kansas City in 2010. Together they have lived in Midtown, Waldo, the Plaza before migrating to Johnson County. Sarah has her master’s in urban administration and is currently in the Kansas City Centurions program. In between the crazy, she likes to drink coffee, run, travel (but never to the same place twice), and experience all things Kansas City!
