Cereal For Dinner

100MEDIA_IMAG0701In my last post, I wrote about my love/hate relationship with meal planning and grocery shopping.  This week, I was feeling great about our trip to the grocery store and good about dinner plans, as well.  Ironically, we had cereal for dinner last night.

Cereal for dinner was perfect.  Cereal for dinner happened because we took an impromptu trip to a Platte City park to meet my mom.  Cereal for dinner happened because we were also able to play with a great friend and her daughter.  Cereal for dinner happened because we had such a great time that what was intended to be a thirty minute trip to the park became a two hour trip to the park.  Cereal for dinner was wonderful because it allowed my kids time to race, run back and forth over the suspended bridge yelling, “my turn!” (or, “my nurn!”) and laughing that contagious laughter that only children can have.

It may not have been planned and it may not have been a well-balanced meal, but my babies won’t ever remember the cereal they ate for dinner last night.  They won’t remember the fact that we weren’t home until after 7 p.m. and we didn’t eat until after 7:30 p.m.  What they will remember is the fun we had and the time we were able to spend giggling, running, climbing, sliding, and swinging with people who love them very much!

Okay, maybe they won’t remember that, either, but I will and I know my mom will.  And, at least they had yogurt and a banana with their cereal!

(Disclaimer: this is not the first night we have had cereal for dinner and it won’t be the last!)

  1. LOVE it! My husband is the main cook in our family, so when it’s mom’s turn to cook, I often turn to breakfast for dinner. My son thinks it’s this awesome treat. Little does he know that this is all I have on hand. And giggles always trump gourmet.

  2. Lovely! And who knows, they may remember cereal for dinner because the associate it with such a fun evening (which is a good thing). My kids always ask for pancakes for dinner when Dad leaves town on a biz trip because I did it once and they thought it was great. And cereal, yogurt & a banana is so much healthier than a fast food drive-thru!
