A Glimpse into the KC Beer Scene (With Kids)

It’s no secret that Kansas City’s craft beer scene is booming! As a couple of beer loving parents we like to enjoy a cold brew after a tantrum filled day, potty training or another day of keeping the kids and us alive. And just because we have a tot with us doesn’t mean we can’t take advantage of all the beer hot spots our city has to offer.

Fun at KC Bier Co
Fun at KC Bier Co

We packed our bag like we were headed out of the country. Perhaps, but we knew if we wanted to enjoy ourselves, we had to be prepared for anything. We got our suitcase, diaper bag, packed and ventured out!

*Note: we did NOT visit all of these locations in one day.

Bier Station
We visited this Waldo spot on a weekday afternoon. There is a plethora of beer to choose from. We opted for a flight so we could sample four beers, and we grabbed the disco fries!  They also sell beer to-go or to enjoy there! No highchairs on hand, but they had a bunch of games like Guess Who, an Etch-a-Sketch, and we snagged a poke-a-dot book which were all a hit with our toddler!

KC Bier Co
This gem is off of 79th street and Wornall in Kansas City. It was another quiet afternoon and we had the entire biergarten to ourselves for a while. One of the (many) highlights of KC Bier Co is the adorable little play area for kids with toys and a little picnic table for the kiddos. We ordered ourselves a tasty flight and some food because our toddler was a little hangry. We also spotted a couple games, coloring books and high chairs that would be handy when the weather is not ideal to be outside. If you’ve got a pooch, the biergarten is also doggy friendly!

Rock and Brews
On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, we headed out to Rock and Brews in Overland Park. They have an amazing patio that is very kid and even pup friendly! On the patio is a jungle gym for the kiddos. Rock and Brews has a large food menu with plenty to choose from, the kid’s menu even had the option of picking the side (carrot sticks, fruit or fries). I love when there are healthy side options for kiddos. They have a variety of local and national beers to choose from. We grabbed some food and went with a flight that included some local and regional beers.

Double Shift Brewing CompanyDouble Shift
We visited this cute little brewery in the Crossroads district on a Thursday afternoon. We ordered a flight and grabbed a table. We didn’t spot any high chairs, but we didn’t have the need.  There were some games to choose from that were aimed toward the 2+ crowd (think Cards of Humanity,) but we spotted a Jenga and turned that into block building fun. The beer was great, and the atmosphere was very relaxed. If the kids or (you) get hungry, grab a bite from Grinders across the street.

Border Brewing Company
After Double Shift, we walked across the parking lot to Border Brewing Company.  This is a cozy little spot with some great beer.  We grabbed a flight and snagged a table in a corner, where there was a small space to race the cars we had packed and provided an excellent view of the city buses that mesmerized our toddler. Another great bonus besides the delicious beer? Unlimited pretzels!

Martin City Brewing Company
We may have been pushing it because of a no-nap day for our two year old when we hit up Martin City Brewing Company, but we still had a great time. We grabbed a table and ordered a flight of the 4 Martin City brews that were on tap. Once our tot was slowly starting to lose it and chucking his snack cup, toys and acting like a hyena we knew it was time to exit and get him home.  Next time, we plan on hitting up the Pizza and Taproom (next door) – we’ve heard nothing but amazing things!

Cinder Block Brewery
This is an adorable brewery in North Kansas City. We stopped in on a weekday afternoon, and sticking with our theme, we got a flight of six different beers. They have a variety of snacks to purchase including Goldfish (every toddler’s dream).  It is a huge space, so we had no trouble finding a place to enjoy our flight and then we checked out the outdoor space with some fun lawn games!Rock and run

Rock & Run Brewery and Pub
This brewery is right in the main downtown area of Liberty. It is currently being renovated due to a partial building collapse, but is using the space next door to the original location. We opted to sit on the patio and ordered a flight and lunch. The kid’s menu had the staples, an extra bonus was the chocolate milk and side options that included fruit, applesauce or french fries. It’s a very family friendly place with some great eats and brews!

We found most places were willing to accommodate us and didn’t bat an eye with our toddler. We are so lucky to live in a city with so many fun places for beer-loving parents and plan to explore more (see below) that our city has to offer! Not sure what Grandma and Grandpa will think when our toddler starts to say, “Is it time to go to the brewery?”

Here are a few other places that are on our radar that we plan on checking out:

The Big Rip Brewing Company

Callibration Brewery

Free State Brewing Company

Torn Label Brewing Company

Colony Espresso & Beer
