Skiing, tubing and snowboarding are the ultimate winter sports in which all ages can participate. We live, however, amongst the plains, and the mountains aren’t exactly a hop, skip and a jump away. Skiing and Snowboarding
Snow Creek operates 60 snow making machines giving shredders a taste of mountain life right here in Missouri! The ski area has a 300 foot vertical drop, 2 triple chairlifts, 1 double and 3 rope tows. A lodge with dining, seating and rentals is on site for warmth and convenience.
Night Skiing and Riding
Beginning at 4 p.m., ticket holders can suit up for a night ride where the slope is lit up and the crowds are small. The resort offers occasional events throughout the season to enhance the ride, like campfires with s’mores and glow tubing. Check their calendar often to view upcoming options.
Tornado Alley Tubing Park
Snow tubing is fun for everyone. A conveyor carpet takes patrons to the peak, avoiding the hardest part of sledding and tubing, the steep climb! A 700-foot long slope awaits riders at the top, and zips them down a multitude of lanes. The facility provides the tubes and any necessary equipment. Tickets are available in one or two hour sessions, and customers can repeat the thrilling ride as much as time allows.
First Timer’s Guide
Planning is key. Although not required, booking lift tickets, snow tubing and gear rentals ahead of time will ensure entrance and save time at arrival. Tickets are refundable within 24 hours of the reservation date, eliminating the risk of losing money should something like weather or change of plans force one to cancel.
With finicky Midwest weather, the facility may not always be able to produce snow when conditions are unfavorable (too warm), another reason to book ahead and call before heading out. The website may not show of-the-moment information, a phone call is always your safest bet.
Tip: February is often the coldest month here, making it the best month to plan your day(s) at Snow Creek as conditions should be perfect for snow making and riding.
For those who need instruction, Snow Creek offers a range of group and private lessons, in both snowboarding and skiing for ages three and up. These lessons are worth the money for kids and adults who have never been on the slopes. In a few short hours, our boys went from timid and scared to confidently using their gear to safely navigate the lift and hill.
Taking place adjacent to the main slope, the lessons are viewable from the lodge and feel approachable for any age or ability. Again, book ahead. Refunds are available up to 48 hours prior to reservation.
What to Wear
Think layers! Start with a mid to heavyweight base layer. These can be purchased anywhere from Costco to REI. A perfect second layer is a pullover or zip up fleece, and last a waterproof pant and jacket/shell. Weather can be unpredictable, so starting warm and adjusting is key to enjoying a day full of winter activities. Remember to expose as little skin as possible.
A stocking cap or mask, waterproof gloves, boots and sunglasses/goggles are also necessary. Don’t forget sunscreen as the reflection of the snow and the higher elevation can surprisingly cause sunburns!
Tip: Purchase a package of hand and toe warmers to keep little hands and feet happy. The warmer they are, the longer they can enjoy the experience. Avoid wool and cotton gloves as those will become wet and cold almost instantly in the snow.
What to Expect
Snow Creek is a popular destination, so expect a crowd, especially on weekends. For a more subdued experience, night-time or mid-week skiing might be your best bet.
Outdoor winter adventures will bring on the hunger pangs! Customers are welcome to bring snacks and food, but are asked to eat outside the lodge. A cafe, pizzeria and bar with alcoholic beverages are available on-site, but expect limited options.
Retail store can provide a few forgotten essentials, but it is best to be over-prepared rather than under.
