Take Action: Hunger Action Month

Kansas City Moms Blog is thrilled to partner with Harvesters to highlight their work in supporting those in need of food assistance in our community.

September is Hunger Action Month which means there’s no better time than right now to educate your children and get involved with addressing food insecurity here in Kansas City. Here are four ways you can partner with Harvesters in these efforts:

Hunger Action MonthGive food.

Consider sponsoring a food and fund drive, collecting some or all of Harvesters’ most needed items. Donate food at one of the many blue donation barrels in local grocery stores, including Price Chopper. Assemble sack lunches with your co-workers or community group that will be used for youth feeding programs. Donate excess garden produce to Harvesters’ Plant a Row for the Hungry program.

Give time.

Harvesters could not feed 140,000+ people every month without the service of local volunteers. One way to get involved is by checking out Harvesters’ volunteer opportunities and scheduling a time to volunteer individually or with your family; corporate, faith-based or other groups are encouraged to volunteer, as well. Youth ages 12 and older are encouraged to learn more about hunger and how they can be involved by becoming active as hunger advocates

Give money.

In addition to financial donations, other ways to give include corporate partnerships, gifts of stock and mutual funds, the Missouri Food Pantry Tax Credit, planned giving, Thrivent Choice and United Way donations. You can make your contribution to Harvesters go even further by checking to see if your employer has a matching gift program. For every dollar donated, Harvesters is able to provide three meals to hungry families, children and seniors in Kansas City.

Give voice.

Ordinary people like you and me have the power to help end hunger in Kansas City and across the country. Consider following Harvesters on Facebook and Twitter and sharing their posts with your friends and family. Sign up to receive advocacy email alerts about proposed changes to nutrition assistance programs. Share your support for hunger relief with your U.S. Senator or Representative.

Finally, don’t miss this thirty day call to action from Harvesters with numerous easy-to-implement ideas for taking action this month!
