Helping You Become a Mom is More Than a Job for Me, It’s a Privilege

It’s your delivery day! First off, welcome to the day that will change your life… forever. As a labor and delivery nurse and a mother, I am telling you this to prepare you for quite possibly, the beginning of the most important journey of your life.

Having a baby changes you, sometimes in the most unusual ways. After becoming a mother, it is impossible for me to think of just myself. My son is a part of me. Nearly every thought of my day touches on the fact that I am a mother. This constantly challenges me to be the best version of myself and to reach higher to achieve my dreams, because he is always watching. My perspective on my own life has forever changed, I practice what I preach even if that means pushing myself further than what I think is possible. I do this all for him, I feel truly blessed to be his mother and he deserves the best.

When I think back to my own delivery day, I remember just how unprepared yet excited I was. My delivery team was hand selected, from my team, my friends, and those I trust my life to. On this day, I realized that this would be a pivotal day in my life, yet I was still unprepared for what it really means to be a mother. To guide me on this journey, especially in those early days, I trusted my team of professionals. They educated and guided me through the challenges of taking care of this precious little being that just came out of my body. I remember the faces who helped me in my most vulnerable of days, and still to this day appreciate their guidance and care.

When I returned to work to help other moms welcome their own child into the world, my perspective had changed. I always took my job seriously, but now I realized just how significant this first day was. Nothing could have prepared me for the challenges and joys of meeting my son. However, I certainly remember how my family and team, guided me through it all. Those first moments with him I will cherish forever, as I truly believe he is my greatest accomplishment. After going through this, I want to give other moms the same experience. I want them to fully enjoy their delivery and feel comfortable enough to just be in the moment, and experience for themselves, what I believe is one of life’s most amazing treasures.

I hope that my patients always realize that first of all, I DO care about you and your baby(ies). This is so much more than a job to me. It is a privilege to be a part of your birth experience. Becoming a mother made me fully aware of just how important the care you receive at this critical time, truly is. Next, your delivery will never be just another delivery to me. Each baby, family, and delivery is unique. There is beauty and excitement every time. That moment of delivery is the reason I call the labor and delivery unit at Overland Park Regional Medical Center my home away from home.

When you hold your baby for the first time, it will be the beginning of this journey. Helping women in those moments, when they become a mother is simply amazing. I feel very blessed to have a role that allows me to be a part of the smiles and to wipe away the joyous tears. Watching a mother look at their baby for the first time is incredible. Seeing this never gets old. I watch them carefully look at their baby noticing the little details and holding their sweet little hands. At this moment, your heart swells and it will never be the same.

My goal is for all moms to experience these wonders, as I know they will cherish these memories as much as I do. Know that as your nurse, I will handle everything that comes our way. Our team will be diligent, prepared, and caring because we know how precious this time is. Remember this is just the beginning, and the journey continues to be unpredictable and rewarding all along the way.
