KC’s Magical Places Where Moms Work and Kids Play

Finding time to get together with other mom friends is difficult at best when you consider nap times, music classes, and doctor appointments. Finding a place to chat is even harder when kids want out of the house but mom wants uninterrupted discussion or even more challenging – a place to get work done.

Mudpie Bakery kids room

There are several magical places in the KC metro where working mama and active kids can co-exist.

Mudpie Vegan Bakery and Coffeehouse

1615 W. 39th Street, Kansas City, Mo.

Mudpie is located in an older house with separate rooms including a kids room with a door that shuts out noise plus a baby gate to keep little ones from making a run for it. The room has several tables and chairs for mama along with toy kitchens, puzzles, art supplies, a chalkboard and a shelf of well-loved toys to keep the kids occupied. Though right outside the door are people working and chatting, I’ve never felt uncomfortable bringing a few kids here so I can chat with a friend or get some work done.

The free wifi is hooked up to Google Fiber which makes this a great location for speedy work. Vegan coffee drinks, hot chocolate, teas and Italian sodas are sold along with muffins, scones and other bakery items. If you’re skeptical about vegan menus, this is a great place to dip your toe in the water.

Little Monkey Bizness
12219 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee Mission, Kan.

Too cold or hot for the park? Try Little Monkey Bizness. Unlike its Olathe counterpart, this play place is built for the little ones. Moms can work with free wifi or chat in a full-service coffee bar overlooking the play area. A snack bar sells healthy options and other supplies you might have forgot to put in the diaper bag.

Kids can play in mazes, inflatables, indoor playground equipment, an art room or with dress up clothes. A separate toddler room offers soft toys for your youngest monkeys.

Parkside Coffee House
8839 Lackman Road, Lenexa, Kan.

Another great place for moms to get together while kids enjoy an open gym. The full service coffee house, a service of Cedar Ridge Christian Church, also offers smoothies and has free wifi. Bring your ride-on toys to play in the open gym area or enjoy the climbing wall and other play areas around the gym.

Be sure to check the website for specific gym hours, but generally the coffee house is open weekdays except for Monday.

Where do you do your best multi-tasking for happy mamas and happy kids?

Sarah grew up in Manhattan, Kansas (Go Cats!), she moved to Minnesota where she met her husband, Shea. Realizing how much she hated snow in May, she convinced him to move to Kansas City in 2010. Together they have lived in Midtown, Waldo, the Plaza, and now Overland Park. Sarah is mom to 10-year-old, Henry, 7-year-old Clark and 5-year-old Lucy. She has her master’s in urban administration and is passionate about making Kansas City a more equitable and supportive community. In between the crazy, she likes to drink coffee, run, hike, travel as much as possible, and experience all things Kansas City!

  1. Kaw Prairie is an AWESOME choice with an indoor play place (think McDonald’s play place on steroids). It is in a room of all windows that dampens the sound to the coffee shop just outside of it. It also has an open gym for riding toys, playing ball, etc. It is on the extrwest side of the metro at K 7 and Prairie Star Parkway, but well worth it for a Mom’s chance to work our chat! ***Socks required

  2. Great list! I’ve been looking for more places where I can talk and my little one doesn’t have to be in a high chair. Thanks!
