Know Your Body’s Numbers

I like to think of myself as an active person. I ran before kids, nothing crazy, but I was out there. After kids it was hard to find the time, motivation, and correct combination of sports bras to effectively hold the “goods”. Now, 3 ½ years out from having our youngest, I finally feel as though I’m back in a regular workout routine. I make waking up early to get my workout in a priority for my mental sanity in addition to the health benefits.

Even with daily activity and being conscious of what I’m eating, the scale has never been a very encouraging friend. Why is it that we can work our butts off, feel great about it, and then a tiny digital number can throw us into a self doubting funk?! What if there was a better way to track our progress and identify the changes that aren’t being translated on the scale? Well friends, turns out there is, and I recently had the opportunity to try it out for myself.

Enter the DXA body scan from DexaFit. Dexa what?! I know I had no idea either, but they had me at “full body composition scan.” DXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold standard of body composition and uses low dose radiation to discover exactly where lean mass, fat mass, and bone mass exist within the body. After the scan you’re presented a full print out explaining the percentages of body fat that reside in each major part of your body like arms, legs, and abdomen. For a science numbers girl, I was totally digging it. It also provides you with the amount of Visceral fat you have (which is linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes) and your bone density so you’ll know your risk of osteoporosis.

Seems pretty high tech right? Well it’s actually pretty simple. I was kindly greeted at the door by Christian, one of their scan experts, filled out some basic information about myself and my lifestyle, and then went back for the scan. You stay fully clothed and just have to lie really still for a few minutes while the scan occurs. Then Christian went over my numbers with me, completely free of judgment, and I was on my way. Their experts are not there to lecture you about your body or progress, they are just there to give you the real numbers so you can go forward and make the best plan for yourself and return to track your progress.

In addition to the scan, they also offer a couple other tests like the VO2 Max and the RMR. The VO2 max is perfect for all you Orange Theory fanatics. It measures your cardio fitness level and pinpoints your fat burning zones so you can exercise more effectively. This way you can train smarter, not harder! I’m super intrigued by this and can’t wait to try it out next time.

The RMR, or Resting Metabolic Rate test, helps you determine your daily caloric needs and ranges based on your metabolism. This test takes about 20 minutes and you’ll leave knowing how many calories you burn in a resting state, whether your metabolism is considered normal, slow, or fast, and your daily caloric needs so you can accurately customize your diet and training plan. So if you’re a MyFitnessPal app girl then this is for you. Find out if you’re actually getting the amount of calories you need.

All of these tests are meant to serve as a way to track your progress. Whether your starting out a new workout program or just curious how your current program is (or isn’t) working, getting your baseline is key. Then returning every few months to check in on your progress will allow to see those changes happening, no need for that pesky scale! DexaFit even has an app for iOS (and soon Android) that clients can use to upload their data for easy tracking. Then you can take that directly to a trainer or nutritionist so they can better customize a plan specifically for you to reach your goals. Cool right?!
