Have you been thinking about a couple’s gateway, but not sure where to go? Do you want to find that perfect place to have some time with your partner to reconnect and recharge, without your kids. You don’t have to go too far to have your well-deserved time off.
Hermann, Missouri is one of my favorite spots for a quick couples weekend. This beautiful town is in the banks of the Missouri River. Known for its German influence, excellent wineries and breathtaking views, Hermann is the perfect destination for a couple’s getaway. It doesn’t matter if your stay is long or short, there’s plenty of places to explore.
How to get to Hermann
Hermann is around a 3-hour drive from Kansas City metro. You can also take the train from Union Station. Most days they have two departures, morning and afternoon and the trip is around 4 hours. The price can vary from $67 to $35 per person depending on the time, day and accommodations you choose. Herman is very walkable, and it has a trolley service to the wineries.
Where to Stay in Hermann
They are plenty of accommodations in this town that will fit everyone’s budget and style. From luxury hotel suites, Airbnb’s, bed and breakfasts and even camping grounds. That being said, both times we’ve visited Herman, we have stayed in the same place, Abigail’s Grape Leaf B&B. This is a charming bed and breakfast located in the downtown area. Their rooms have the most amazing vintage décor, it feels like walking into another era. The owners are very nice and helpful and are always giving suggestions on what to do or where to eat. The breakfast is delicious, and bonus points for the delicious dessert they bring you every night.
Things to Do
This town is famous for its wineries, Hermann wine has won multiples awards around the world. So, it comes with no surprise that one of the best things to do in Hermann is wine tastings. The experience and the wines are wonderful. Here are a couple of our favorites.
Adam Puchta was founded in 1855, and it’s the oldest continuously owned family winery in the United States. You can enjoy a wine tasting in their original family homestead tasting room. They also have a store where you can purchase your favorite wines, souvenirs, and snacks. Their outdoor areas are beautiful and perfect for a picnic in their tables.
Stone Hill Winery is Missouri’s most awarded winery. This property is stunning inside and out, they have a guided tour where you can see the underground cellars, you can peek at their museum room, or grab lunch or dinner at their Vintage 1847 restaurant and of course try some delicious wine.
Another fun option is to do the Herman Wine Trail. This is a group of seven family-owned wineries that partner to offer guests a unique wine and food paring tasting experience. With your $30 ticket, you can visit any or all wineries at your own pace. Check out their website to learn about their six wine and food pairing events through the year and purchase your ticket.
But there’s a lot more to do in Hermann, if you are in the mood to keep trying new flavors and are a fan of beer visit their local breweries, Tin Hill and Turbulence. And for the fans of Bourbon try some good bourbon at Fernweh Distilling Co., Copper Mule Distillery and Black Shire Distillery.
If you enjoy the outdoors, bike or hike the Katy Trail which is less than 3 miles from Hermann. There are museums and historical places you can visit as well. Just a 12-minute drive from Hermann, in Starkenberg, Missouri, you can visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows — a hidden gem! No trip is complete without a little shopping and Hermann is filled with shops featuring local craftsmen, artists, and curated antiques.
Where to Eat
There’s a many great local restaurants to indulge in Hermann, but one of our favorites is Vintage 1847 at Stone Hill Winery. Originally this space was a carriage house and a barn, but it was converted in to a restaurant in 1979. This unique restaurant serves lunch and dinner with German and American flavors. In the mood for seafood and frozen cocktails, Doxie Slush is your place. Hermann Wurst Haus has a big variety of German meats and is a good option for lunch. It’s also a market so you can buy some goods to take home. Other places you can consider are Tin Mill Restaurant, 4th St. Pizza and the Concert Hall and Barrel Tavern.
