Indoor Fun at We Rock the Spectrum

Parents everywhere are always searching for a place to play with their children. Somewhere that gets the family out of the house, but without breaking the bank; provides a safe environment, but still capable of entertaining a variety of age groups; and a place you didn’t just visit last week.

Cassidi Jobe, owner of We Rock the Spectrum — Kansas City, was looking for the same thing. As a mother of two boys with autism, she also needed a place where her children were accepted and not over-stimulated. She struggled to find exactly that, so she built a sensory gym in her home, but something was still missing.

“My boys still weren’t getting that socialization, that community inclusion,” Jobe said. “So I started searching online, and I found We Rock the Spectrum and the rest happened really fast. I found out about them in February, signed a lease in March, and we opened in June of 2016.”

We Rock the Spectrum is a sensory gym for children of all ages and all abilities. The gym provides a cn6b5745variety of ways children can play — zip line, gentle swings, a craft area and imagination-based toys. For children with sensory sensitivities, We Rock the Spectrum removes all of the flashing lights and televisions, while still providing a safe, welcoming place for children to play. For neuro-typical children, the sensory gym is just as fun.

“It’s been really cool to watch neuro-typical families come in and embrace our environment,” Jobe said. “It’s non-stimulating for any kind of child but there is also an added general awareness in the gym that we are an inclusive environment.”

We Rock the Spectrum offers open play sessions Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. Weekend hours do vary as the gym may be closed for special events, but all weekend and holiday hours are posted on both Facebook and Instagram.

Open play is $12 ($2 off for siblings); however, We Rock the Spectrum offers membership deals as low as $50 and Early Bird Sessions on Mondays & Wednesdays (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for only $8.

In addition to open play sessions, the gym is a great place to host birthday parties. Unlike most kid-friendly venues, when you book a birthday party at We Rock the Spectrum, the gym shuts down to the public, providing a completely private environment for your group. Party packages start at $150/hour, with a maximum of 40 guests. A party room for food, drinks & decorations is also provided so the special birthday boy or girl can blow out the candles and open presents after playing with friends.*

img_3975Still need more of We Rock the Spectrum awesomeness in your kid’s life? The gym hosts weekly classes, such as Moving with Music and Kid’s Yoga to help engage your children in different activities while still keeping to their mission of being inclusive and understanding of everybody’s needs. Plus, open play is included in all classes and the membership punch card can be used. For a complete listing of classes and time, be sure to like We Rock the Spectrum — Kansas City on Facebook.

Lastly, We Rock the Spectrum can come to you with its We Rock on Wheels bus, which will make an appearance at KCMB’s Noon Year’s Eve!

“It’s basically a gutted school bus with a sensory gym inside,” Jobe said. “This is one more way that we can support the community by coming to them, either for private play dates, occupational therapies, community events or daycare activities.”

With more than 30 locations nationwide, We Rock the Spectrum is on a mission to provide an inclusive environment for all children while creating the general awareness to be mindful, kind and nice to everyone. We Rock the Spectrum — Kansas City is currently located in the Northland; however, plans of a Johnson County location are in the works for an early 2017 opening.
