Damien is our middle kiddo and sometimes get lost in the shuffle of five. And with attention deficit disorder, it’s hard to get him to complete a task. So, when the opportunity of playing football with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City came up, we jumped on it! He definitely needed something to call his own.
In YMCA Flag Football, now sponsored by the Kansas City Chiefs, the focus is on teamwork in a positive and structured environment. Children will learn how to throw, catch, run routes and other aspects of the game that will keep them active and help them develop skills such as hand-eye coordination.
Flag football kept him focused, determined, and ready to complete a task. That was huge for us! Coach D was very patient with not only Damien, but with all the boys on the team. We loved his coach and all that he stood for. Coach D was so passionate about football, teaching the boys the true meaning of teamwork and how to be a better athlete.
As his parent, I was very nervous about him being just as lost in the shuffle with this team as he is at home sometimes (he is very quiet). But the team embraced him, and he was able to find what he needed the most, his voice.
This Y program was more than just a sport. It’s a feeling of compassion, trust, and strength. Not only did my son learn football skills and develop a stronger self esteem, participants received Chiefs jerseys and footballs, invitations to special family events and more. The best part was hanging out with with KC Wolf and the Chiefs Cheerleaders.
