Just before we transition to fall, the sunflower fields in Kansas City bloom and invite us to admire their beauty.
Visiting a local sunflower field has become an annual tradition for many families. You can take photos of the flowers, photos of your family, and at some locations enjoy sunflower festivals and other fun activities.
Be aware that not all places have sunflowers in bloom at the same time, since it depends on when they plant their seeds and what the weather conditions are. Some are blooming in August, while others are expected to bloom closer to Labor Day in early September. The best way to check out the current status is to visit each farm’s Facebook page.
If you want to take your own family photos at one of the sunflower fields be mindful that the best time of day for pictures is typically in the evening when the sun will not be straight overhead or so bright that everyone is squinting.

Kansas Sunflower Farms
Gieringers Family Orchard & Berry Farm
Gierengers offers you-pick sunflowers as well as zinnias and it’s a perfect spot to take pictures and enjoy some family fun. You will need a field access pass ($3 per person) but the farm also offers season passes. Children 2 and under get free admission. Included in admission are wagon rides and access to the children’s play area. Check the Facebook page for daily updates, including days and times that the fields are open.

Grinter Farms
This is probably the most well-known sunflower field in the metro and many
local photographers offer sessions while the field is in bloom. Access to the field is free, but donations are encouraged, especially if you cut flowers to take home. Sunflower Festival at KC Pumpkin Patch
On weekends in August, you can head out to KC Pumpkin Patch/KC Wine Co and experience the Sunflower Festival. Tickets are cheaper online than at the door, so pre-purchase your tickets to make it a more affordable outing. Kids under 2 get in free. In addition to sunflowers, you’ll find a huge variety of kid activities, food and drink for purchase, and live music.

Johnson Farms Plants and Pumpkins
This is one of the best spots for fall fun and once it opens for the season, your admission ticket will get you in to the u-pick sunflowers, as well as the apple orchard, pumpkin patch, kid’s activities, and lots more. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for opening day information.
