To the Newbie at the Gym

The new year is here and with it, an onslaught of new people at the gym.

I know a lot of gym “regulars” will not love the crowding, the unintentional ignorance of unwritten gym rules, dismiss “the resolutioners.” But we are all fighting our own battles.

In 2018, I lost 60 pounds. That was in large part due to joining the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and finding myself accepted into a wonderful and diverse community of people trying to improve themselves, too. (This isn’t a sponsored post, I swear!)

It was scary to start.  I overthought EVERYTHING. I have never been athletic, and I’ve always struggled with my weight.

But I want you to know that I see you.

If you make the effort, I am proud of you.

If you don’t even make it to the door, and sit in the parking lot, because you are anxious, I am proud of you for trying. Try again tomorrow.

If you are a star athlete and want to be stronger, faster, more agile, cool!  Get after it. I am proud of you.

If you show up and decide to go to only cycle classes because they are dark and you think nobody can see you and your extra pounds,* I’m proud of you.

If you’ve been going every day for years, consistency is awesome and I admire you, and am proud of you.

If you are joining for the two hours of childcare to maintain your sanity, and take a shower in peace and quiet, I am proud of you. Self care is important. Your kids will be fine.

If you are using exercise to fight the invisible battles between your ears, I am proud of you. You’ve got this. Keep going.

If you can barely walk that first lap on the track and feel embarrassed or ashamed, I am proud of you. The first steps are the hardest.

If you go for the community you find in smiling desk attendants, waving small children, silly costume days, we are here for you. I’m proud of you.

Be kind. Be welcoming. I am proud of you. I am silently cheering from you. I hope you succeed.

Brie Hilton is a kinda sorta stay at home mom of two adorable but wild boys, 6 and 3 years old.   In her spare time (ha), she sells clothing online, advocates for her special needs child, and is getting certified to teach group fitness classes. She likes iced coffee, napping, fundraising for various KC charities, adventures with her husband and lady friends, and posting far too many photos on her Instagram and Facebook accounts.
